Born in Bulgaria in 1974 in a family of artists, Milena Doncheva knew from an early age that she was destined to be an artist. She attended a Fine Arts High School and the National Arts Academy in Sofia where she graduated with an M.A. in textile design. Milena has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows since 1999, using various mediums in her work such as textile, painting and drawing. In 2006 she was the recipient of both the National Competition for Young Bulgarian Artists (St. Cyril and St. Methodius International Foundation) and the Ministry of Culture of Bulgaria Award. Milena currently lives and works in Toronto.

Artist Statement

We live in compliance with the unlimited laws of reality, time, and daily routine. The temptation to break these laws and to create a new world exists for Milena as she constantly invents and reinvents. To control such creation is impossible, along with the multiple realities we live with.

For Milena, the process of creating is a evolution of layered images generating stories. The journey of the works encompass many steps. An idea commences the process, yet the techniques develop through the translation of stories. The progression of work transforms into an adventure of discovery.
